Costas Simitis

The Central Jewish Council of Greece expresses the deep sorrow of Greek Jews for the death of former Prime Minister Kostas Simitis. A great personality who left his mark by serving the Greek people consistently and soberly, charting paths of progress and prosperity.

At the same time, Costas Simitis was the first Greek political leader to implement secularism in Greece by abolishing the inscription of religion on the identity cards of Greek citizens.

The Greek Jews do not forget that Costas Simitis proposed and the Greek Parliament legislated and defined the 27η January as Holocaust Remembrance Day.

Our deepest condolences to his wife Daphne and his family.

May his memory be blessed.
