JOINT DECLARATION
of 2th Summit of Mayors against Anti-Semitism
Athens, 1η December 2022
This historic gathering is a symbol of hope and promise for a better and more inclusive future amid a disturbing wave of anti-Semitic bigotry sweeping the world.
We regret today's resurgence of this age-old social scourge. In too many cities around the world, anti-Semitism is pervasive throughout public life, in the forms of physical violence, verbal harassment, political extremism and targeted vandalism.

On October 13, 2021, an International Forum on Holocaust Remembrance and the fight against anti-Semitism was held in Malmo, Sweden, entitled "We Remember - We React". The Forum was attended by many foreign officials, as well as representatives of Jewish organizations, including the EJC president Dr. Moshe Cantor. During his speech, Dr. Cantor asked all leaders to focus their efforts on countering extremism and conspiracy theories that are prevalent especially among the younger generation.
"For more than a year, the youth lived with restrictive measures and were exposed throughout the day to internet misinformation, extremism and anti-Semitism. "Never before in history has it happened that the new generation, people who don't know much about the Holocaust, have been so heavily brainwashed with conspiracy theories and lies," said Dr. Cantor. "Therefore a key challenge of our time is to protect the new generation from extremism. So far most of our strategies have failed."

Today, 5.10.2021, the European Commission presents the first EU strategy to fight anti-Semitism and safeguard Jewish life. With anti-Semitism on the rise in Europe and beyond, the strategy sets out a series of measures structured around three pillars: the prevention of any form of anti-Semitism,the protection and preservation of Jewish life and the promotion of Holocaust research, education and remembrance. The strategy proposes measures to intensify cooperation with online companies to curb anti-Semitism online, measures to better protect public spaces and places of worship, as well as the creation of a European research hub on modern anti-Semitism and a network locations where the Holocaust took place. These measures will be reinforced by the EU's international efforts to lead the global fight against anti-Semitism.

In Jerusalem from 13 to 15.7.2021 hundreds of personalities from all over the world, representing countries, political tendencies and different religions, were there to definitively answer the question "what is anti-Semitism" in our time
From its most traditional focus, the Far Right, to the extreme Left, but also the fruit of the era, the conspiracy theorists, anti-Semitism is currently recording an unprecedented increase worldwide, at least since the Holocaust.
Hatred against Jewish identity, overt or covert, leads to a rapid increase in attacks, physical as well as verbal, against people of Jewish origin to the point that many times, even in the "liberal West" or rather mainly there, many Jews are forced, for the first time in decades, to conceal symbols and other identifying features when in public view. It is not only the people, it is also the places of worship of the Jewish communities, even the Holocaust memorials and the Jewish cemeteries, that are being desecrated, something that we have unfortunately experienced quite strongly in Greece in recent years.
Here in Jerusalem, on 13.7.2021, the most important international event for all those fighting the growing hatred against the Jews began. The 7th World Forum to Combat Anti-Semitism, which is held every two or three years, this year attracts an impressive number of speakers from around the world, aspiring to unite voices and forces across religious, political and national divides.
