KISE sent the following message of support to the Jewish community of Turkey, following the devastating earthquakes that have claimed the lives of thousands of people in Turkey. Among the victims was the president of the small but historic Jewish community of Antioch, and his wife, who were trapped when the apartment building where they lived collapsed. They were recovered dead after three days. With a history of 2.500 years, the Jewish community of Antioch numbered only 18 members, who are safe. The city's Synagogue, a 250-year-old building, despite the severe damage it has suffered, is one of the few buildings in the city that have been saved and are still standing.
The KISE message mentions characteristics, among others:
"We are deeply disturbed by the sweeping earthquakes that hit southeastern Turkey. As the death toll continues to rise we mourn the massive loss of life and pray for the safe recovery of the survivors.
