Mr. Patrick Maisonnave, Ambassador of France in Greece, awarded Mr. David Saltiel, President of the Central Jewish Council of Greece, the prestigious Officer of the Legion of Honor.
The honorary event took place at the French Embassy residence on December 7, 2022, in the presence of Greek Ministers and MPs, Mr. Noam Katz, Ambassador of Israel to Greece, and Mr. Ernst Reichel, Ambassador of Germany to Greece. This award recognizes the path of a man who inspires with determination of keeping the memory of the Holocaust alive.
The Ambassador welcomed the tireless effort, so that the public space of Thessaloniki, birthplace of Mr. Saltiel, preserves the memory of the Jews who were uprooted from it. The culmination of his struggle was the construction of a Greek Holocaust museum, in collaboration with the Holocaust Memorial in Paris.

On Friday, December 2, 2022, in Nea Mesimvria and at PAOK PAOK's training center, Iraklis Larissa played a friendly game against Israel's champion Maccabi Haifa, which ended in a 1-1 draw. The Larisa team accepted the honorary invitation of Maccabi Haifa and supported the holding of the friendly match with Aris on Sunday, December 4, 2022, to support the construction of the Holocaust Museum of Thessaloniki. The aim of the two friendlies is to send resounding messages against anti-Semitism, racism, violence and all kinds of social exclusion.

In an event renouncing racial hatred and anti-Semitism, delegations from PAE Aris, Maccabi Haifa and the World Jewish Congress (WJC) laid wreaths at the Holocaust Memorial in Thessaloniki, in memory of the city's 50.000 Greek Jews who were exterminated in concentration camps.
In fact, the president of the Central Jewish Council of Greece and the I.K. Thessaloniki, David Saltiel, brought with him a Maccabi Haifa T-shirt with the signatures of all the football players, which included a message in favor of the construction of the Holocaust Museum, for the purpose of which the proceeds from the football match are allocated to "Kl. Vikelides".

The new CEO of the American Jewish Committee (AJC), Mr. Ted Deutch, as part of his official visit to Greece, had a special meeting on 2.12.2022 at KISE with the President David Saltiel, and the members of the Bureau Manos Alkhanatis, XNUMXst Vice President , Victor Isaac Eliezer General Secretary and General Treasurer Daniel Benardout. The meeting was also attended by Eddie Zemenidis, executive director of the Hellenic American Leadership Council (HALC), who accompanied Mr. Deutch, as well as the President of I.K. of Athens, Albertos Tarapoulos.
During the meeting, Mr. Deutch was informed about the long-standing presence of Jews in Greece, about the functioning of Jewish communities, as well as about the challenges faced by Greek Jewry. The Central Jewish Council of Greece expresses its congratulations to PAE Aris and Maccabi Haifa for the strong message against intolerance and anti-Semitism that they sent from the Kleanthis Vikelidis stadium in Thessaloniki during the friendly football match, held on 4.12.2022.
Hellenic Jewry welcomes the decision of the two groups to donate the proceeds of the match to the construction of the Holocaust Museum of Greece in Thessaloniki. This is an action of substance, an action of memory of the 50.000 Jews of Thessalonica who were exterminated by the Nazis and their collaborators in the German death camps.
The two teams demonstrated their active commitment to creating a climate of solidarity and mutual respect on the pitches, in the field of sports, but also in the wider society, and are a bright example to be followed in the fight against bigotry, anti-Semitism and violence.
