The c.g. of the Central Jewish Council of Greece, Victor Eliezer, commented in a scathing manner on the recent statements of SYRIZA MP Petros Pappas.
Petros Pappas, referring to the internal party procedures of his party, pointed out that "Stefanos Kasselakis was overthrown at the exact moment he was trying to lead SYRIZA to a constitutional conference. That is, to transform this party of tendencies, of small barons, this party of left-wing guards of pure leftism, it reminds of the orthodox Jews - this obsession let's say with the purity of the faith. Because some people don't want to lose the keys to the temple."
In his post at facebook (10.9.2024) Victor Eliezer commented that many times the thirst for a few minutes of publicity leads to stupidity. At the same time, he mentioned about Petros Pappa: "So let's inform him that the Orthodox Jews are not obsessed with the "purity of the faith", which he invokes. On the contrary, if he had taken the trouble to read before making this particular statement, he would have found that Jewish Rabbis and philosophers throughout the centuries interpret the scriptures in different ways, enrich them with new approaches, and in many cases there are also controversies on capital matters of faith.
As for "the keys of the temple", after the destruction of Solomon's Temple in AD 70, no Jewish temple exists, only what remains of it, which is none other than the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem.
Fanatics, of course, exist among the Jews, but there are also among the believers of both Christianity and Islam, and some of them even shield the "purity of the faith" with violence, while some others literally "don't want to lose the keys of the temples".
The MP's answer: The comparison I made is unfortunate
In my interview yesterday, I made an unfortunate comparison of the desire for left-wing ideological purity of some SYRIZA-PS executives, with the religious faith of orthodox Jews.
My respect for all religious doctrines is a given and is an inescapable attitude of my life. Being at the same time an active member of the Greece and Israel friendship group of the Hellenic Parliament, I would like to express my unlimited respect, for the important contribution of the Greek Israelites, both in my city of Thessaloniki, and throughout the common historical course of the two ancient our peoples.
