The importance of modern societies learning about the Jewish Holocaust, the "darkest moment in human history", was highlighted at the event "If not now when?" which took place on 5.2.2023 at "M. Theodorakis" in the old port in commemoration of the International Day of Remembrance for the victims of the Holocaust.
In his introduction, Mr. George Antoniou, assistant professor of the Chair of Jewish Studies at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki explained the terms "Holocaust" and "genocide" and how they were established post-war to describe the annihilation of the Jews. He explained that the Jewish Holocaust had a number of unique characteristics compared to other acts of mass violence. "Never before has a religion and a people been targeted over such a wide geographical range, in such a systematic way, with such a radical overturning of moral and social norms. Also never before had such an impersonal form of extermination, technologically intelligent and modern, been developed. Also, the racist ideology of the Nazis sometimes imposed the "irrational" extermination of the Jews, for example at the time when the Third Reich was looking for workers for its factories, it preferred to exterminate the Jews rather than exploit them more in terms of forced labor.
