Due to the measures to limit the coronavirus pandemic, this year's events took place without the presence of the public and a delegation of officers of the XNUMXrd Army Corps, with only the participation of the absolutely necessary institutional actors.

Ο Deputy Minister of the Interior (Macedonia - Thrace sector), Stavros Kalafatis, representing the government at the event, stated that "the events that we bring to our memory today cause awe and shock" and added: "they have already been recorded in the blackest colors in world history and are an integral part not only of the history of Jews everywhere, but also of our own history. It is the story of our Jewish brothers. The story that reminds what fascism, Nazism, totalitarianism means. And unites the voice in a single phrase: Never Again".

Ο regional governor of Central Macedonia, Apostolos Tzitzikostas, said, for his part, that "the Region of Central Macedonia today honors the victims of the memory of the Jewish Martyrs and Heroes of the Holocaust and at the same time we send a clear and resounding message to everyone: "Never Again".

Ο Mayor of Thessaloniki, Konstantinos Zervas, underlined that "Never Again" is more than a statement" and noted: "It is much more than a position and a life attitude. It is a sacred commitment of all of us to this atrocity: never again in history, never again in our country. It will be a lasting life deposit from all of us."

Ο David Saltiel, president of the Central Jewish Council and the Jewish Community of Thessaloniki he mentioned -among other things- that when the Russian army entered Auschwitz "it met shadows of people, corpses, ashes" and "there everyone realized the magnitude of the crime committed by the Nazis against the Jews". Mr. Saltiel, also vice-president of the World Jewish Congress, also focused on the fact that Thessaloniki lost 97% of its Jewish citizens to the Nazi concentration camps and added: "The youth must learn. To draw our own conclusions and react to similar events. "Never Again" should not be just two words".

""Never Again" must not be forgotten, what happened must never happen again", declared, for his part, the Rector of AUTH Nikos Papaioannou.
