ONLINE TRIBUTE OF THE REGION OF K.MACEDONIA & I.K.TH. FOR HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL DAY 2021 - Central Jewish Council of Greece, coordinating body of the Jewish Communities of Greece

On January 31, 2021, the Region of Central Macedonia and the Israelite Community of Thessaloniki presented an online tribute honoring the National Day of Remembrance of the Greek Jewish Martyrs and Heroes of the Holocaust (see here is the video).

The tribute started with a statement by the Prime Minister of Greece, Mr. Kyriakos Mitsotakis, made during his visit to Auschwitz in 2020, followed by messages from:

-Vice President of the Government, Mr. Panagiotis Pikrammeno

-Ambassador of the State of Israel, Mr. Yossi Amrani

-Deputy Minister of Interior (Macedonia – Thrace), Mr. Stavros Kalafati

-Regional Governor of Central Macedonia, President of the Union of Regions of Greece and President of the Committee of the Regions of the EU, Mr. Apostle Tzitzikosta

- Mayor of Thessaloniki, Mr. Constantino Zerva

- Chancellor of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Prof. Nikolaos Papaioannou

- Vice-President of the World Jewish Congress, President of the Central Jewish Council of Greece and the Jewish Community of Thessaloniki, Mr. David Saltiel

- President of the Holocaust Museum of Greece, Mr. Giannis Boutari

The positions of the representatives of the bodies of the Government and the city of Thessaloniki were framed, among other things, by snapshots from the laying wreaths held on January 27, 2021 at the Holocaust Memorial. (See here is the video).

The tribute ended with screening of the 55th Demetrius Festival production entitled "Don't Forget Me", a dramatized reading of excerpts from Leon Saltiel's book of the same name by A.E. President of the Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou and actresses Roula Pateraki and Efi Stamouli.

In honor of Memorial Day, on January 27, 2021, the White Tower was illuminated with the Auschwitz prisoner uniform and the yellow star worn 78 years ago by the 50.000 Jews of Thessaloniki, the 67.000 Jews of Greece and the 6.000.000 Jews of Europe. The initiative of the Municipality of Thessaloniki and the Israelite Community of Thessaloniki caused a sensation and was a unique image that traveled around the world through the internet and social media, joining campaigns to strengthen Holocaust Remembrance, such as that of World Jewish Congress with the hashtag #WeRemember.

Finally, as part of the anniversary, the show was shown on January 30, 2021 "Anne Frank's Lost Innocence", which was presented by the theater group of the Israelite Community of Thessaloniki, "Entremosotros", on November 5, 2016, at the "Aneton" Theatre.
