A press conference was held on 25.1.22, at the Thessaloniki Concert Hall, on the occasion of the concert co-organized by IKTH, KOTH and OMMTH on the occasion of KOTH's concert with Gil Shaham for the National Holocaust Remembrance Day, which was attended by the Presidents of OMMTH Mr. Vassilis Gakis, IKTH Mr. David Saltiel and ETOS Mr. Stathis Georgiadis.
Ο President of OMMTH, Mr. Vassilis Gakis pointed out that: “…The veil of silence should not cover everything. Because silence is a moral bankruptcy which not only "burdens" consciences, but strengthens the efforts of those who purposefully attempt to distort the truth. We, as the Thessaloniki Concert Hall, will highlight the historical memory of the Holocaust as befits. We will approach it through Art and present it to the public as we did with the Armenian genocide, as we will do on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Asia Minor Disaster. You see, our country has experienced the tragedy of two Genocides. Of the Greeks of Pontus, the Greeks of Asia Minor and our Jewish fellow citizens...".
Ο President of IKTH Mr. David Saltiel among others he emphasized that: "....On the National Day of Remembrance of the Greek Jewish Martyrs and Heroes of the Holocaust, we honor the memory of the six million victims of the Holocaust, including 67.000 Greek Jews, 50.000 of them from Thessalonica. In circumstances like this, such cultural collaborations highlight, using the notes of works by great music creators, the importance we must show every day in matters of solidarity, respect and acceptance of diversity, as well as the defense of human rights.... ».
Ο President of ETOS Mr. Stathis Georgiadis He noted that: "January 27, in addition to being a National Day of Remembrance, is also a day of reflection. It should be a day of constant reminder that something like this cannot happen again. I have many stories in my memory from the stories of Heinz Kunio who survived the horrors of the camps and I know how important memory is and how timely the message of the Day is. In this context, KOTH collaborates again with IKTH and OMMH for an important concert with a prominent soloist...".
Η Artistic Director of the Greek Orthodox Church, Mrs. Zoi Tsokanou in turn she stated in her note that: It is the wish of all of us to put a stone with our music on Sunday in preserving the memory of those who lost their lives in the hells and to never allow such an atrocity to happen AGAIN.
“…Through the short program of the concert we seek to create various feelings and connections in the minds of the listeners with this anniversary and its multiple messages. Barber's Adagio is so popular all over the world because it leaves no one unmoved with its ups and downs that lead to a spiritual upliftment.Beethoven's Violin Concerto is a small musical world in itself. The most complete work of the relevant repertoire and the only one of its kind written by Beethoven, who reflects on concepts such as Love, Freedom and Democracy…”.
We remind you that the Israelite Community of Thessaloniki, in collaboration with the State Orchestra of Thessaloniki and the Thessaloniki Concert Hall, are organizing a special concert for the National Day of Remembrance of the Greek Jewish Martyrs and Heroes of the Holocaust with a guest of one of the greatest violinists of our time, the virtuoso Gil Shaham, who collaborates with the Greek Theater under the musical direction of its artistic director Zoi Tsokanou.
The program begins with Psalm 22 interpreted in Spanish-Hebrew by Mspsiphone Mariangela Hadjistamatiou and follows Barber's riveting "Andaggio for Strings," America's most popular symphonic work, reverentially spreading peace and bliss, evoking a sense of being lifted up to heaven.
Gil Shaham interprets the sublime "Violin Concerto" by Beethoven, perhaps the most important work of its kind. A witty creation by the master composer that adds lyricism to high virtuoso calls to express lofty ideals and reflect on Love, Freedom and Democracy.
