On 19.5.2022, the presentation of the German-language edition of the book by Mair Maisi "The Jewish Community of Chalkida" took place at the Ionian Center in Plaka, in the presence of the Austrian ambassador in Athens Ms. Popeler, who gave a greeting.
The attendees were welcomed by the president of the Association of Austrians in Greece, Ms. Elfriede Damala, as well as Ms. Marion Hoffmann, who, in collaboration with Ms. Damala, translated the book into German. The project was implemented with the financial support of the "Zukunftsfonds" Foundation, the Republic of Austria and Ms. Ariane Kontelli.
His greeting followed general secretary of KISE, Mr. Victor Eliezer, who congratulated all those who contributed to the publication of the book and referred to its importance emphasizing that "it is a easy-to-understand, comprehensive book summarizing the tradition, life, history of the Jews of Chalkida, as well as information about the Synagogue, the cemetery, the Monuments and the Museum. A book that promotes the special character of the Romanio community of Chalkida, whose history has its roots in the 3rd BC. century".
Then the author of the book Mair Mayis in his speech he referred to the continuous and creative presence of the Jews in Chalkida, the special characteristics of the graves in the Jewish cemetery of Chalkida, which is one of the oldest in Europe, preserved intact from BC, in the period of the War and concluded the speech with the wish: "To one day see people respecting the beliefs of others, without passion, without hatred and for the words bigotry, anti-Semitism, intolerance to disappear from our vocabulary forever. There will always be hope."
Then the historian Ms Maria Efthimiou spoke about the etymology of the words for the regions of Evia and Boeotia, stating that the prefix "Eu" of Evia characterizes a place fertile with rich natural callus. He also pointed out that the Israelite Community of Chalkida maintained its Romaniote tradition over the centuries by maintaining its customs and manners, which were not altered by the presence of a large number of Sephardic Jews, as was the case in other Romaniote communities, and this shows how strong ties existed between the members her, but also with the local community. In conclusion, he stated that this particular community is a historical model of Jewish presence throughout Europe.
Ο lawyer and historian Thrasyvoulos Papastratis spoke about the history of the Jews of Chalkida, pointing out that "the period between the wars was the golden age of the Jewish Community of Chalkida", as well as about the author of the book stressing that "Marius Mais's books examine the entire time spectrum of the Jewish presence in Chalkida and the whole range of its activities. The history of the Community, the Synagogue, the monuments, with a focus on the ancient Roman tombs with their special shape and crypt. In the three-thousand-year history of the Jews of Chalkida, the presence of many great rabbis and scholars of the sacred texts is included, a fact that proves the special importance of the Community and is presented in detail by the books of Mais."
Then the Leon Gavrielidis thanked the "organizers for their excellent and important initiative to make this book available to the German-speaking public" and pointed out that "such actions contribute exemplary to communication between social groups, through the transmission of knowledge, which ultimately contributes to the development of good friendly relations and oppose intolerant and racist attitudes".
