This year we focus on the journey through the Holocaust. I remember a recent trip of mine.
Last November, I passed through the infamous 'Arbeit macht frei' (Work sets you free) gate at Auschwitz-Birkenau. I will never forget this moment. I saw the horrible remnants of the genocidal machinery, as well as moving pictures of Jewish life in Europe in the 1930s. Weddings, family tables, rituals, scenes of simple family life. Everything was lost because of systematic murder, unique in human history.
I saw the camps where Jews, Roma, Sindi, homosexuals, dissidents, prisoners of war, and disabled people spent their last days in the most brutal conditions.
The United Nations was founded to prevent this horror from happening again. However, tragedies like Cambodia, Rwanda, and Sbrenica show that the poison of genocide is still flowing.
We must be alert to the emergence of intolerance, extreme ideologies, social tensions and discrimination against minorities. We must also teach our children. The United Nations Holocaust Awareness Program has created effective educational tools and strong partnerships to pass these lessons to students around the world.
When I stood next to the Auschwitz crematorium, I felt deeply saddened by all that had happened there. However, I was given hope by all those who liberated the concentration camps on behalf of all humanity. Let us join forces today in the common journey to a world of equality and dignity for all."
