The International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Holocaust was celebrated by the 2nd EPAL of Rethymno as part of the European Parliament's Ambassador Candidate School program. The UN General Assembly has declared January 27 as a day of remembrance for the victims of the Holocaust by the Nazi regime during World War II.
The action - tribute of the 2nd EPAL started with the screening of the film "Renee Molho- A Bookstore in six chapters", which tells the story of two Jewish residents of Thessaloniki, who managed to survive thanks to a Spanish diplomat and some Greek families who fled them, during the Second World War and thus did not go to the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp in Poland .
Then he followed speech by Ms. Eleftheriou Xenia, scientific manager of the Jewish Museum of Thessaloniki. Mrs. Eleftheriou referred to the events of 1945 and the inhuman behavior of the Reich towards the Jewish Community. In her speech, she focused on the history of the Jews of Crete, where during the German occupation, in order to go to Auschwitz, they boarded the ship Tanais, but it sank and thus many Cretan Jews perished. Also during her speech, she referred to stories of Jews and how they were saved by Christians in Crete, such as Ms. Lilian Capon. Concluding her speech, she referred to the historical researcher Mr. Nikos Stavroulakis and his great contribution, both to the Jewish Museum of Thessaloniki and the restoration of the synagogue in Chania.
The aim of the action was to inform students and raise their awareness about the inhumane conditions experienced by 6 million Jews who perished in the Holocaust, as well as other population groups (Roma, homosexuals, disabled) and countless other victims of Nazi brutality.
It is good not to forget these victims and it is the duty of all of us to ensure a future with established human rights, such as freedom and dignity, in accordance with the values that the European Union stands for.
