PIERCE SERIES OF EVENTS FOR HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL DAY 2023 - Central Jewish Council of Greece, coordinating body of the Jewish Communities of Greece

Pierce, on the occasion of World Holocaust Remembrance Day, organized a series of events this year (2023), culminating on Friday 27 January, a day designated by the UN as the day of remembrance for the victims of the Holocaust by the Nazi regime, during Second World War.

From Monday, January 23 to Friday, January 27, the creations of XNUMXrd high school students were exhibited in the lobby of the school, resulting from the collaboration with the Department of Museology of the University of Ioannina, under the guidance of Associate Professor Esther Solomon and the exhibition Art in the Holocaust of Yad Vashem. In addition, the school library was converted into a Holocaust Information Center with the most modern and up-to-date publications on the Second World War period. Finally, during the week all students of the school were informed in the English class about the Holocaust, the Greek Jewish communities and the meaning of the terms genocide, hate speech and disinformation/propaganda.

On Friday, January 27, six events took place, one for each class:

His classes high school they watched an enlightening theater performance by the English Drama Club, under the guidance of professors Gisela Iosif and Petra Tseliou.

Her students XNUMXst and XNUMXrd High School, Ioanna – Maria Varotsi, Dimitrios Karyamis, Oren Levi and Xanthippi Papadaki had the opportunity to meet Ms. Lola Angel, a Greek Jew from Thessaloniki and a survivor of the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. Ms. Angel's brilliant account of "defeating Hitler" left the audience speechless.

Her students Second High School they had the opportunity to meet the prolific writer and poet Mr. Iosif Ventura. The tangle of his story, as a hidden child in the war, was unraveled by the students Sandro Abravanel, Samuel Amarilios, Myrto Arkadianou and Alexandros Paleodimos – Charalambidis.

All events were accompanied by the magical voices of Eva Astrakas, Nineta Eliezer and Nana Borbolis, under the guidance and accompaniment of music teachers Dora Panagopoulos and Orestis Hatjinakis. Music was played by students Annita Karagianni, Dafni Moussa – Papakonstantinou and Kallisto Sampanis.

It is important to remember, discuss and teach about the Holocaust, not only to better understand the past but also to sensitize future generations to new forms of anti-Semitism, xenophobia, prejudice and hatred.
