On February 25 and 26, 2022, the work of the international conference on "Holocaust, Genocides and Mass Atrocities: Remembering the Past to Protect the Future" took place at the Elite City Resort Hotel in Kalamata, organized by the Ministry of Education and Religion and the Diocese of Messinia, with the support of the US Embassy in Athens and the Fulbright Greece Foundation and joined the actions of the Greek Presidency of the IHRA.
At the beginning of the work, the Minister of Education and Religious Affairs, Niki Kerameos, delivered a greeting via teleconference, the Metropolitan of Messinia, Mr. Chrysostomos, the Israeli Ambassador to Greece, Yossi Amrani, the US Ambassador to Greece, Jeffrey Pyatt, via teleconference, the President of IHRA, Giorgos Polydorakis and via video conference AJC CEO David Harris.
The statement of the Metropolitan of Messinia, Mr. Chrysostomos, is characteristic, who stated that the Conference is very important because it concerns the major issue of the Holocaust and genocides, making special mention of the personalities who participated, while he also praised the importance of holding such an event in the city of Kalamata.

A Memorandum of Cooperation was signed between the Minister of Education and Religious Affairs Nikis Kerameos, the Director of the French Foundation Mémorial de la Shoah Jacques Fredj, the President of the Jewish Museum of Greece Maki Matsa and the President of the MOHA Research Center Anna Missirian.
The aim of the Memorandum is to strengthen and put on a stable basis the implementation of activities and seminars for teachers and students with a central focus on genocides and the Holocaust. Among other things, it is foreseen that the contracting parties will organize trainings for teachers, students and civil society regarding the Genocides of the twentieth century, while the possibility of educational programs on the Holocaust that will be addressed to education officials and more widely will be explored. of the public or other interested bodies.
During the signing, Minister Nikis Kerameos thanked the representatives of the organizations, emphasizing the importance that the Ministry of Education and Religion attaches to teaching about the Holocaust and Genocides, especially at a time when, unfortunately, we see wars breaking out on European lands, awakening memories from the darkest pages of our history.

Maria Vassilikou, historian and external associate of the EME, participated in the special transnational discussion for teachers from Greece, Israel and the United States on "How the IHRA Recommendations for Teaching and Learning about the Holocaust Can Help You?". The discussion, which was based on the guidelines recently issued by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) for teaching the Holocaust, was held online and organized under the IHRA Hellenic Presidency by the Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs, the United States Holocaust Museum and Memorial and the Yad Vashem.
