Events for the Remembrance Day of the Jewish Community of Kastoria will be held on Sunday, March 31, 2024, the Municipality of Kastoria, marking the 80th anniversary of the deportation of the city's Jews, in March 1944, and their extermination in the Nazi death camp Auschwitz-Birkenau.
René Revach traveled to the death camps photographing her family's painful journey
He opened the old family trunk which was full of children's clothes, pillowcases, curtains and sheets. She chose a white tablecloth made of transparent knitted fabric and decided that this would become the "medium" that would transport her to the past and connect her family's history with her own imperative to confront "Tehom" (Tehom is the biblical Hebrew word for the primordial depth), the abyss of the Holocaust.
"First I dipped the cloth in water to lighten it from its heavy psychic load. Then I began the journey back in time following the railroad tracks that brought those cattle cars with their human cargo to the scene of the crime. So I got to Birkenau and Auschwitz to end up in water again – a wet cenotaph. For me, the water element is very important: I grew up in the water, there I "cleansed" my emotions", says photographer Rene Revach to "K".
