On 8.12.2020, the 4th meeting of the European Commission's Working Group on Anti-Semitism was held via video conference. The meeting was attended by representatives of the European institutions, as well as national delegations of the EU member countries, with the participation of the competent ministries, the special envoys for anti-Semitism and representatives of the Jewish Communities.
On behalf of Hellenic Jewry, the First Vice-President and the General Treasurer of KISE, Mr. Manos Alkhanatis and Daniel Benardout participated in the teleconference. Greece was represented by the special envoy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the fight against anti-Semitism and the defense of the memory of the Holocaust Dr. Efstathios Lianos – Liantis.
The topics discussed during the meeting were the evolution of each country's strategy to deal with anti-Semitism, the practical use of the IHRA definition of anti-Semitism and the countering of anti-Semitic prejudice.
The start of the work was announced by the Vice-President of the EU. for the Promotion of the European Way of Life Margaritis Schinas, who reiterated that Europe is determined to win the fight against anti-Semitism. He also thanked the German EU Presidency. for the approval of the Declaration of the Council of Europe on the inclusion of the issue of combating anti-Semitism in all policy areas and informed that in 2021 a single EU strategy is to be approved. to combat anti-Semitism.
During the teleconference, one session was devoted to the presentation of the good practice manual for the application of the IHRA definition of anti-Semitism. The manual will be made by the European Commission and IHRA, it will be translated into all EU languages. and will be issued in late 2020.
The teleconference ended with a speech by the Vice-President of the EU. on Values and Transparency Vera Jourova, who made special mention of the urgent need to tackle misinformation, as well as anti-Semitic conspiracy theories related to COVID.
