The events for the National Day of Remembrance of the Greek Jewish Martyrs and Heroes Victims of the Holocaust took place in Trikala with great success on Sunday, January 22, 2023 with the laying of wreaths at the Holocaust Memorial by all Authorities and representatives of Israeli Communities, Associations, Clubs, Agencies and a large number of people, as the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Municipality of Trikkaia played.
The event continued at the Synagogue of Trikala with the lighting of 6 candles in memory of the 6.000.000 victims of the Holocaust and a 7th candle lit by the children of the 4th High School of Trikala to remind us of the hope and wish that in the future the new generation will not live again such horror.
During the event, greetings were given by the Regional Governor of Thessaly, Mr. Costas Agorastos, the Mayor of Trikkai, Mr. Dimitrios Papastergiou, the representative of the Central Jewish Council of Greece, Mr. Ilias Kampelis, and the President of the Jewish Community of Trikala, Mr. Iakov Venouziou. Messages sent by the Minister of Environment & Energy Mr. Kostas Skrekas and the Ambassador of Israel Mr. Noam Katz were also read.
The keynote speaker of the event was Mr. Theofilos Anastasiou, philologist, writer and researcher on "Memory is our duty".
Afterwards, the students of the 4th High School read poems and historical events with the help of their teacher, Mr. Kostas Michalakis, and they all shouted together NEVER AGAIN HOLOCAUST, NEVER AGAIN WAR.
The event closed with choral songs performed by the Municipal Choir of Trikala under the direction of conductor Mrs. Elenis Ziakas.
We thank all our guests and fellow citizens for their presence, stressing that the Holocaust anniversary events are not only ceremonial in nature, but their ultimate purpose is to teach, to reflect and to be a foundation for building a world free from the phenomena of prejudice and intolerance, a world of peace, justice and freedom, which we owe to future generations.
