The following is a related article published on the website flix.gr On 24.1.2023.
Adio querida (or adio kerida): A traditional Sephardic love song written in Ladino, it talks about separation, love, death. In the area of urban legend of the Jewish community, it is said that "Goodbye beloved" was sung by the Jews just before entering the trains that would take them to the Nazi concentration camps.
15 March 1943: The first train bound for Auschwitz departs from Thessaloniki.
March 2023: 80 years later, the 25th Thessaloniki Documentary Festival honors the memory of the city's Jewish community, which was exterminated during World War II, through a tribute.
Bringing to the fore painful testimonies and shocking documents, the films of the tribute "Adio querida: From Thessaloniki to Auschwitz - 80 years" shed light on one of the darkest pages of world history. The unhealed universal trauma acts as a reminder and warning for the future.
The most shocking record of the horrors of the Holocaust, the "Shoah" (1985) by Claude Lanzmann, voted by many film theorists as the best documentary of all time, will be screened as part of the tribute. It is a mind-blowing 566-minute journey, which will be screened in its full version. Lanzmann worked non-stop for 11 years, interviewing prison guards, witnesses and Nazis, and explored in depth the historical, anthropological and cultural impact of the Holocaust. A true cinematic achievement, "Shoah" ensures that the Holocaust will never be consigned to historical oblivion or the excuse of ignorance.
In a special evening, the power of music and the magic of the cinematographic image will come together on the Olympian stage. The "The Golem" (1920) is an allegory for the tragic fate that would soon befall the Jews and is one of the first films to address issues of anti-Semitism. Directed by Paul Wegener and Carl Beze, this rare iconic horror film from the early days of German Expressionism paved the way for classic masterpieces such as Nosferatu and Metropolis. The film draws its inspiration from a medieval Jewish legend and today, beyond its historical value, it is recognized as a cult science fiction gem. The beloved director and musician Yiannis Veslemes wrote original music especially for the event, which will accompany the screening of the film live.
The shocking "Heroes of Salonika" documentary (2021) by Tom Barkai focuses on the horrors of daily life inside the concentration camps. Six Thessalonian Jews, survivors of the Holocaust, most of whom live in Israel, describe to us in chilling detail the tortures, the methods of extermination, the diseases, the hunger, the experiments they suffered. It is one of the rare times that we feel so deeply the brutality of Nazism and the extent of the crime.
In "Salonique, ville du silence / Thessaloniki, city of silence" (2006) Thessaloniki-born Maurice Amarazi pays tribute to the glorious multicultural past of the city, the so-called "Jerusalem of the Balkans", which came into conflict with the narrative of unified national identity that prevailed after the end of the Balkan Wars. Combining images from the modern city with testimonies of Holocaust survivors, this nostalgic revival attempts to break the veil of official silence about the tragic fate of the Jewish community of Thessaloniki.
In the heartbreaking documentary "Kiss to the children" (2011) by Vassilis Loule five elderly Greek Jews recount to the camera the terrifying experiences they experienced in occupied Greece during the Second World War. Through the words and stories of people who experienced the horror firsthand, we too become participants in a tragedy that will never cease to concern all of humanity.
The documentary "Out of history" (2012) by Fofos Terzidou it traces back both to the rich history of the populous and thriving Jewish community of Thessaloniki and to the less prominent path of the Jewish community of Katerini. Through testimonies, evidence and analysis of historians, the film deals with the ever-present issue of official historical memory, exploring the destructive stereotypes that continue to this day to breed prejudices and maintain the silence of the most inhumane crimes.
