The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, in his speech at the University of Athens on "The Fundamental Character of Human Rights at the Present Time" made a special reference to the Greek Holocaust Museum in Thessaloniki, emphasizing: "Before the Nazi occupation in Greece, Thessaloniki was one of the centers of Jewish culture in Europe. The Holocaust Museum under construction shows Greece's determination to honor those who perished and recognize the crimes of the past. This is extremely important at a time when Holocaust denial and other forms of anti-Semitism are on the rise across Europe."
