On 8.9.2024, the Ambassador of Italy in Greece, Mr. Paolo Cuculi, accompanied by the commercial attaché of the Italian Embassy in Athens, Mr. Enrico Barbato, the Honorary Consul of Italy, Mr. Georgia Sarantopoulou and the President of the Greek-Italian Chamber, Mr. Christos Sarantopoulos visited and was guided to the Jewish Museum of Thessaloniki.
The visitors were welcomed by the Vice-President of the Community Council, Mr. Lazaros Sefichas, who, on the occasion of looking back at the history of the Jews of Thessaloniki, mentioned the modern functioning of the Community and the implementation of important initiatives, such as the Holocaust Museum, the programs to combat anti-Semitism and more.

At 8.9.2024 the Vice-Chancellor and Minister of Economic Affairs and Climate Protection of the Federal Republic of Germany, Dr. Robert Habeck, in the context of his presence at the 88th Thessaloniki International Exhibition, where Germany participated as an honored country, laid a wreath at the Holocaust Memorial.
The Vice-Chancellor, who was accompanied by the Minister of Agriculture and Food, Mr. Cem Özdemir, was welcomed by the President of KISE and IKTH, Mr. David Saltiel, who, in a short discussion, informed the visitors about the progress of the Holocaust Museum.

One of the most important development projects implemented in the country, the Holocaust Museum of Greece, is taking shape in a symbolic place for Thessaloniki, the area of the Old Railway Station, from where the death trains left, with the Jews of Thessaloniki for Auschwitz.
The landmark museum for the city, keeping alive the memories of the past, will at the same time be a pole of attraction for thousands of tourists annually, participating in the tourism development engine.
The first phase of construction of the Holocaust Museum has already begun, with preliminary work continuing and the first excavation works already completed. With a total area of approximately 9.000 sq.m., the Museum, which is implemented by the Israelite Community of Thessaloniki with donations from the Greek State, the Federal Republic of Germany, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation and the Genesis Prize Foundation in honor of Dr. Albert Burla CEO of Pfizer, but also from donations from individual people, it is expected to be ready at the end of 2026.

The construction of the Hellenic Holocaust Museum in Thessaloniki has now entered the starting line dynamically, since with the completion of the first works of organization of the construction site, the contractor consortium of companies "GEOEREYNA-OFS", in a period of seven months, will carry out the preliminary works of the project, which they concern excavations and supports and the construction of the foundation piles.
The aforementioned is pointed out in today's announcement by the company "Samaras & Associates SA - Consulting Engineers", recalling that the Museum has a total area of approximately 9.000 sq.m., will consist of six above-ground and two underground floors and will be developed around a small urban grove.
He adds that in addition to the halls of the permanent exhibition, the Holocaust Museum of Greece will include rooms for periodical exhibitions, archives, education and research, as well as multi-purpose and recreational areas and administrative offices, while the outdoor space will be created on the adjacent property parking.
