The Council of the European Union adopted a Resolution on the promotion of Jewish life and the fight against anti-Semitism (15.10.24).
This Resolution comes at a time of dramatic increase in anti-Semitism in Europe, especially after the brutal massacre by Hamas on October 7, 2023.
On 24 & 25.9.2024, the work of the 6th meeting of the working group on the implementation of the EU strategy to combat anti-Semitism took place in Budapest, chaired by the Coordinator of the European Commission for combating anti-Semitism and promoting Jewish life, Katharina von Schnurbein.
The topical issue of anti-Semitism was the theme of the Conference 'Never Again? Democracy cannot tolerate anti-Semitism" held in Vienna, on September 10 and 11, 2024. The Hellenic Parliament was represented by MPs Athanasios Davakis (leader), Evangelos Syrigos and Evangelos Apostolakis.
New Democracy Member of Parliament Evangelos Syrigos in his statement in the section "Developments in the Middle East and how they affect our societies" noted that "Judaism and Israel are not the same thing. Judaism is something much broader than Israel. Israel, however, is a child of the Holocaust of Judaism, and thus the opinion was established that only a Jewish state could provide real security for the Jews."
